Sunday update

A nasty combination. Acqua e Sapone, the team which likes to curse the Garmin riders as they pass by, and a team which has had three riders given bans for their involvement in the Oil for Drugs case. Bettini, who refused to sign the anti-doping pledge, and openly threatened Sinkewitz for breaking omerta. And the sorry remnants of dope-soaked Saunier-Duval, which never showed any interest in facing up to their problems. Instead they ran away, pretended to be shocked, and now they have changed their name, as if a new name can somehow hide what lies beneath. A dirty team by any other name, and with any other owner, smells just as rotten.

Are we meant to feign surprise at this entirely predictable development? Wouldn't want to get those all-important baseline measurements too early, after all.

Only in Boulder.

So Australian riders are just naturally clean? Really?

Just cleaner than the rest.

Certainly not Aussie trackies. Remember that huge drug scandal a couple years ago?

With regard to Lance and Don Catlin, look at this bit:

http://www.pezcyclingnews.com/default.asp?pg=fullstory&id=6498

The boys from PezCycling News manage to find Lance--in Austin of all places!--and join him for a training ride. There even are pictures of Lance chatting on the phone like some 16 year-old girl. (So much for the revolutionary training methods ushered in by Lance.) Yet, poor Don is pulling out the remaining hairs on his head as he tries to get in touch with Lance.

On a serious note, is Lance part of Team Astana's doping protocol? Damsgaard's program is said to be excellent. Having Lance tested with the rest of the team would be a good development.

Legit question-- Why do the Acqua e Sapone riders curse the Garmin riders?

thanks in advance

This latest episode in the return of his holiness stinks (to high heaven)...I can't imagine any other cyclist would be given this kind of leeway. But then again, he has a built in defense for any scrutiny..."Cancer Awareness"...Can't bother setting up a testing protocol...too busy banging starlets...err, I mean raising Cancer Awareness... Total crap, but, too many in the mainstream media buy his crap without question...jeez...he's already got his excuses planted for the upcoming season...brilliant...

1: Yeah....why are the Garmin riders getting cursed? The holier than thou anti-doping stance?
2: why wouldn't Lance just use the existing anti-doping regime at Astana? The perception we're left with is that he has something to hide. What does Catlin bring to the process that Damsgaard doesn't? Lance controls the Catlin Team through the contract he writes with them. No disclosures that aren't prior-approved, don't make LA look bad, don't give away any secrets, etc.

Anon 12:06 has a good point.

if astana have this fab testing program, couldn't lance have just had that info posted online?

also, has he even started the testing for the passport (nevermind how bogus that is)?

About Saunier-Duval, has anyone come across any remarks by Gilberto Simoni about his former team? He seemed to be acting like a mentor to the young R. Ricco. Also, some of the results in the 2007 Giro by Saunier-Duval were just as suspicious as those in the 2008 Tour.

For example, look at the way Simoni and Piepoli went 1-2 on the stage to Mount Zoncolan. Or, look at the way Ricco and Piepoli went 1-2 on the stage to Tre Cime Di Lavaredo. (Remember that after the Mount Zoncolan stage CONI, the Italian authorities, took samples from Ricco, Simoni, Di Luca, and Mazzoleni, if I am remembering correctly. Later CONI revealed that all of the samples had strange hormone levels, those which would be found in young children.)

Simoni had the gaul to question Basso's performance, which turned out to be true. Shame he couldn't see what was right under his nose.

Remember Simoni and Ricco doing a really snide interview with Procycling around the time of the 2007 Giro in which they basically sat there laughing at getting away with it and mocking the rest of the peloton?
